Last week, NST reported that the Terengganu Education Department had sent 66 schoolboys with “effeminate tendencies” to a camp aimed at helping them behave appropriately.

Ahmad Razif Abdul Rahman, who was chairman of the state’s Education, Higher Education, Science, Technology and Human Resources Committee, said his department was proactively identifying male students who were failed to take part in associations, uniformed bodies and sports to join the personality development programme but denied the step was aimed at “correcting” effeminate behaviour. The course was to “build student character.”

For the last fortnight, there have been hundreds of sad Christian students, along with parents and Bible Knowledge (BK) teachers.
“What’s going on?” angry parents asked one BK teacher. “You mean to say students who scored straight A+ in their 9, 10 or 11 other subjects could not score an A or an A+ in BK?”
In fact, no student scored an A+ in the subject this year.
Since past years, there has been the perception of an unfair grading scale for this subject, but it has been particularly glaring with this year’s results.
The reason for this perception is BK classes are usually small. The students are proficient in English, the medium of the exam. They attend classes every week for two or more years. With regular tests, exams and drills, an experienced BK teacher can usually accurately predict how their students will do in the final exam. BK teachers know that SPM Bible Knowledge keeps high standards in the grading.
The paper tests two books – Luke’s Gospel and the Acts of the Apostles. But really good students can match the high standards with perfect answers. This is possible for all text-based subjects. SPM Bible Knowledge (code 9221) is based on clear right and wrong answers.
I appeal for an investigation into the results of 2010 top scorers not only for Bible Knowledge but also for Chinese Literature, two subjects with only a small number of candidates.
Do the Lembaga Peperiksaan Malaysia (LPM) directors know what their officers or machines are doing to the students’ grades?
In this age of computers, grading needs the critical supervision of God-fearing humans. I write as a believer in the human spirit of excellence and in commendable national conscience.
Looking at the calibre and capabilities of the students involved, there was clear injustice in the 2010 Bible Knowledge grading.

Sarawak BN's stranglehold over the legislature has given Taib ample opportunity to bulldoze amendments to the Land Code and forestry laws through the state legislature, over the three long decades of Taibocracy.

A flurry of amended laws allowed Taib's administration to take over NCR land with casual contempt for indigenous people's rights to land under adat or customary law, as recognised by the 1958 Land Code and the federal constitution.

For example, a Land Code amendment in 1994 allowed the minister in charge of land matters to extinguish native rights to land by simply posting his decision in a local newspaper and on an official notice board. Another land amendment in 1996 shifted the onus for proving NCR claims from the government to the native communities themselves.

A forestry law passed in 1987 declared it a crime even to stand anywhere near a logging blockade, after dozens of barricades sprang up around Baram, fuelling international criticism of deforestation. The natives standing peacefully at the blockades were reported to have been beaten by police and loggers, and attacked with tear-gas, but the BN-dominated state assembly remained silent on the human rights issue.

When native communities succeeded in mapping their own land, winning NCR recognition from the courts, Taib's government responded by passing a law prohibiting natives from making such maps for use in lawsuits.

“Such amendment(s) can be seen as an effort to give easier way for the top down approach of centralisation in the implementation of (a) leader's single-minded vision of development, rather than decentralised, diverse and dynamic systems. This will inevitably led to monoculture or (a) homogenous way of living.

“Consequently, the blessed cultural diversity of the nation would eventually be lost as a result of the denial of indigenous people's rights,” argued seven Sarawakian land rights organisations in a joint communique in Sarawak news site Rengah in May 2000, after yet another Land Code amendment further restricted the means of identifying NCR land.

PETALING JAYA, April 9 — Secondary school history textbooks are too Islamic and Malay-centric and have downplayed the contribution of non-Malays and other religions in the country’s history, a historian said today.

Historian Dr Ranjit Malhi Singh also believed that “scant attention” has been given to the efforts of the Chinese and Indians in the development of the nation.

The author of history textbooks up until 1996 also charged that there were too many “half-truths and factual errors” in the current syllabus, and that it was laden with “value judgments.”

“There should be no value judgment in our textbooks. It is the greatest sin in any history book.

“There is a lopsided emphasis on Islamic civilisation... five out of 10 chapters of the current Form Four history textbook deal with Islamic history whereby earlier the Form 4 history textbook only had one chapter on Islamic history,” Ranjit said at a discussion organised by Catholic Teachers’ Association at the Assumption Catholic church here.

According to Ranjit, “half-truths” and inaccuracies were evident in the existing syllabus. As an example, he said the history books have omitted the fact that Parameswara (founder of Malacca) was a Hindu prince from Palembang who died a Hindu.

He also said the current syllabus gave the wrong impression that the other races did not fight courageously in defending Malaya during the Japanese Occupation, and that only the Malay Regiment did so.

“Thousands of Punjabi, Gurkha, British and Australian soldiers died defending Malaya during the Japanese onslaught.

“Thirty-three of the 232 names on the Tugu Negara are Sikhs,” said Ranjit.

The historian pointed out that the current Form Four history textbooks had reduced by more than 25 per cent of the text related to Christianity, Hinduism, Buddhism, Confucianism and Taoism compared to the previous syllabus (from 1,112 words to about 832 words.)

Ranjit lamented the fact that non-Malay leaders were not duly recognised in the history books.

“The current Form 2 history textbook has downplayed the role of Yap Ah Loy in developing Kuala Lumpur, it has just one sentence on him.

“Yap Ah Loy was why Kuala Lumpur became what it is today, he established the township... he initiated the KL-Damansara road, and was the first person to build brick shophouses in 1884,” said Ranjit.

The majority of the 100-odd people who turned up for the discussion today agreed with Ranjit’s findings.

Many of them, mostly non-Malays, expressed fears of an unbalanced teaching of history in the classroom, with specific emphasis only on Islam and Malays.

Some present today were heard whispering “pseudo-Islamisation” to each other during the discussion.

One parent, who did not want to be named, has begun a petition to demand a revamp of the syllabus.

“What kind of balanced proportion is this none? One civilisation that is glorified at the expense of others.

“History classes become more like ‘agama’ classes, children have no opportunity to learn about comparative religions,” she said.

Ranjit said he had already contacted the director-general of education and planned to notify him of the suggested revamps to the history module.

He said that the Form 1-5 history textbooks should be reviewed to ensure factual accuracy and consistency and a balanced account of the country’s history.

He also said the advisory panel and writers should be drawn from various ethnic groups, and that the textbooks should be devoid of value judgments.

“All history textbooks should be revised to ensure factual accuracy, consistency... right now they are not.

“What’s more, all 17 authors of the books belong to one ethnic group. How can this be? You must have a balanced ethnic composition,” said Ranjit.

He also called on the government to change the methods of teaching history to be geared towards active participation and live debates rather than memorising and regurgitating facts.

PROTECT AND DEFEND CHRISTIANS' RIGHT TO USE THE ALKITAB

We are grateful to Almighty God for bringing together Christian leaders from across churches in Semenanjung, Sabah and Sarawak to address the current controversy surrounding the impounding of Bahasa Malaysia Bibles, the Alkitab, at Port Klang and Kuching. This decision weighs heavily on us because of the implications not only for Christians but for all Malaysians.

We are united in our reaffirmation of the freedom of religion and worship. Therefore, our position is that there should be no restrictions, proscriptions or prohibitions whatsoever on the Bible or the use of the language of our choice in the practice of our religion, as it was in the days before and after the formation of Malaysia.

Christians, like any other Malaysians, are not demanding for anything beyond our constitutional and fundamental human rights as enshrined in Article 11(1) of the Federal Constitution and Article 18 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

The current controversy surrounding the Alkitab is just one of many issues that concerns Christians. There has been a systematic and progressive pushing back of the public space to practice, to profess and to express our faith. For example, the wearing and displaying of crosses and other religious symbols, using religious words and constructing places of worship have been restricted.

When Christians express this concern, we do so not just for ourselves but on behalf of all Malaysians. Our faith forms a critical component of our identity as Malaysians in nation-building as enshrined in the first pillar of our nation's Rukunegara: Belief in God.

As regards the offer made by the government on 22 March 2011, we respectfully state that this does not address the substantive issues. In point of fact, our previous offer made in 2005 to use the term "A Christian Publication" was only honoured in respect of one shipment of the Alkitab. Subsequent shipments were similarly held up and subjected to further arbitrary conditions for release.

In order to move forward, we call on the Government to commit itself once and for all to remove every impediment, whether legal or administrative, to the importation, publication, distribution and use of the Alkitab and indeed to protect and defend our right to use the Alkitab.

This includes revoking all orders made under the Internal Security Act 1960, which have declared the Alkitab as a threat to national security. Neither can the Alkitab be considered a threat to public order under the Printing Presses and Publications Act 1984. We categorically reject the characterisation of our Holy Scriptures in this manner.

Instead, we see our Holy Scriptures as providing enlightenment and direction. In the words of the psalmist, "Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light for my path." (Psalm 119 : 105). In the New Testament is stated the teaching that we hold dear and true : "All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the man of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work." (II Timothy 3 : 16)

We remain committed to work with the Government for a viable and long-term solution where the detailed processes and procedures are made clear and unequivocal and so long as our fundamental liberties as enshrined in the Federal Constitution are not infringed.

As for the copies of the Alkitab that have been impounded and desecrated, we reiterate our position that the action of the Ministry of Home Affairs (KDN) in stamping the Bibles amounts to an act of defacement, disrespect and treating with disdain the holy book of the Christians.

Given the unfortunate experience of KDN's tendency of taking arbitrary action without consulting affected parties or respecting the religious sensitivities of the Christian community, any decision to collect copies of the Alkitab which have been stamped and serialised would be with a view to prevent the possibility of further arbitrary acts of desecration, disrespect or destruction being committed against the Holy Scripture of the Christians by KDN and its officers.

We have left it to the 2 importers to decide whether or not to collect the Alkitab, based on their different specific circumstances and level of trust in the authorities and the processes in their local context.

Nevertheless, no matter what their decision is, we remain united in our common stand to uphold the principle of freedom of religion which includes the free availability without hindrance or obstacle of the Alkitab and all sacred scriptures in Malaysia.

We continue to call on all peace-loving Malaysians to pray for a dignified resolution to these critical issues in the life of our nation.

Perkasa has sent out an order to all its 'troops' to keep a look-out on bloggers, tweets, and newsportals.

KUALA LUMPUR: Perkasa, a Malay rights group, has instructed its grassroots members to monitor bloggers, tweets, news reports and news portals which raised sensitive issues.

They are asked to zero in on sensitive issues relating to Islam, Bahasa Malaysia, Malay special rights, citizenship of non-Malays and issues pertaining to the position of the King.

“I have told them to immediately lodge police report and give us a copy of the report (if they come across such articles,” Perkasa president Ibrahim Ali said at a press conference here today.

Perkasa has 5,940 grassroots leaders in 99 districts throughout the country, comprising former army personnel and police officials, and ex-parliamentarians and assemblymen.

Ibrahim, who is also Pasir Mas MP, said he has also instructed grassroots leaders to attend talks and seminars where certain individuals tended to raise sensitive issues.

Lulu Would Like You To Meet The Malaysian Version of Ting Hai 丁蟹

As Lulu was reading the Teoh Beng Hock / MACC RCI proceedings, one of the characters really reminded me of Ting Hai.

The TVB buffs out there would recognise this name Ting Hai. He is one of the main characters for The Greed of Man 大時代, a TVB drama series back in the 90s. The drama is currently airing on Astro Channel 305.

This Ting Hai character, to quote wikipedia, is "A stubborn, uneducated and pathologically self-righteous brute who solves his problems through violence and intimidation".

The Malaysian version works in MACC.

On Tuesday, "Ting Hai" wept as he recalled the hours after Teoh Beng Hock was found dead.
For a moment, Lulu thought he was feeling remorseful over his actions.
But alas... this is "Ting Hai" we are talking about.

The tearful episode happened when Anuar was explaining to the commission why he had to stop at his home in Puchong before briefing his superior, Hishamuddin Hashim, in Putrajaya.
He said he wanted to vent his feelings to his wife. “I told her I could feel the people’s anger. I told her to be careful for herself and our children because I was the investigating officer in the case.”

Why defacement of the Alkitab is desecration
Ng Kam Weng

Some government officials have claimed that Christians are making an unnecessary fuss over the recent stamping of the Alkitab seized in Port Klang and Kuching.

After all, they say, the Government also requires copies of the Quran to be chopped/stamped with a notice of government approval before they are sold in the shops.

Even some Christians also wonder why such a big deal is being made about the stamping since Christians, unlike Muslims, do not regard printed copies of the Bible with reverence. It is just a printed text. What matters is the message conveyed by the Bible.

This article seeks to address the failure to understand the reason for rejecting the stamping of the Alkitab. The terms of the debate need first be clearly defined to ensure accuracy in my analysis and coherence of my argument.

Since the issue is whether the government officials committed desecration of the Holy Bible let me begin with some definitions taken from the Oxford English Dictionary.

Holy
1. Of a thing, place, etc.: kept or regarded as sacred; set apart for religious use or observance; consecrated.
2. Of a god or icon: (to be) held in religious veneration or reverence; spec. in the Christian
Church, free from all contamination of sin and evil, morally and spiritually perfect.

Sacred
1. Consecrated to or considered especially dear to a god or supernatural being.
2. Set apart for or dedicated to a religious purpose and so deserving veneration or respect;
consecrated, hallowed (in names of animals and plants indicating ancient or traditional
veneration).

Desecration 1. Remove or violate the sacred nature of, profane; fig. spoil or treat with contempt (something venerated or admired).

From these definition I shall say that when Christians refer to "The Holy Bible" they are commending it as something set apart or dedicated to religious activity and thus to be held in reverence.

There is some diversity among Christians in the way they approach the Bible. Some devout Christians approach the text with veneration. Other Christians feel they do not need to revere a printed book, but they will still consider the text to be indispensable in leading them into the presence of the Holy God.

We should also keep in mind that Muslims display great reverence for their holy text, as is evident from the way they physically handle the printed Quran and how they protest (violently in some cases) when the Quran is reportedly mishandled or desecrated.

How do we decide when a holy text has been desecrated, that is, violated and treated with contempt? Let us consider several scenarios pertaining to how the holy text could be treated:

1. A government official stamps on copies of the Quran to declare they are legally approved by the authorities.

2. A Christian stamps his name on the inside cover to declare ownership of a copy of the Bible.

3. A Christian highlights a scripture text while reading the Bible.

4. A critical scholar scrawls on pages of his Bible with the word "LIES AND MYTHS" while a militant atheist cuts off sections of the Bible he considers out of date and irrelevant (for example - miraculous stories).

5. A Nazi mob burns a heap of seized Bibles with wood carved in the form of the Swastika.

Comments on the above scenarios:

1. Obviously, stamping on these Qurans is not an act of desecration. Rather, it positively declares that these copies of the Quran are to be accepted as authoritative texts to be used by Muslims in their devotion. Its intention is one of positive regard in contrast to desecration that treats the text with contempt.

2. This action has no expressed valuation on the Biblical text. The owner simply declares his ownership of the book. The question of desecration does not arise.

3. For this devout Christian, highlighting the texts emphasizes his response while engaging with the text - as a human listening to the voice of God speaking through the text. It represents the personal response of the reader as he is led into the presence of the divine. Obviously, the reader's attitude is one of reverence rather one of triviality and contempt.

On the other hand, other Christians may hesitate to highlight the text even when they experience spiritual uplift while reading the text because of their cultural background and personal sentiments. In this case, both these groups of Christian should respect each other and give allowance to one another so long as both groups respect the Bible and more importantly, obey the spiritual injunction of its teachings.

4. There is no desecration when a critical scholar declares he does not regard the Bible as the revealed word of God. He may even exercise his academic freedom and publish articles that criticise the Bible. The scholar is entitled to his view but the militant atheist is expressing contempt for the Bible and commits desecration by cutting up the Bible.

5. The Nazi mob is expressing publicly their contempt towards the Bible. The fire symbolically declares the intention of the Nazi movement to destroy both Christianity and the Bible. This is a desecration and a violent declaration of war.

The Question

Obviously, the issue of desecration is a complex one. We need to take into account the cultural values and the intention of the actors in making judgment when someone makes a mark on a holy text. We need to be sensitive to both the intention of the actor (message sent) and the perception of the believers of the holy text (message received). They may or may not coincide.

How then do we evaluate the action of the government officials when they stamped the Alkitab with the words: "FOR CHRISTIANS ONLY" "BY ORDER OF THE HOME MINISTER".

Background Information

The root cause of the problem can be traced back to the December 1981 when the then Deputy Minister of Home Affairs gazetted the prohibition of the Alkitab in Malaysia under Section 22 of the Internal Security Act 1960 (PU (A) 15/82).

It was a draconian order prohibiting absolutely the printing, publication, sale, issue, circulation or possession of the Alkitab. The gazette contained a very serious accusation, which might even be considered seditious, stating that the prohibition was made on the grounds that the Alkitab is prejudicial to the national interest and security of the Federation.

In March 1982, a subsequent decision of the Deputy Minister repealed the above order in recognition of the fact that it is unacceptable to prohibit Christians from using their Holy Scriptures.

This was done vide PU (A) 134 which, while retaining the prohibition, subjected it to the condition that "this prohibition does not apply to the possession or use in Churches of such publication by persons professing the Christian religion throughout Malaysia".

It should be emphasised that such a restriction is unacceptable by any standard of modern democracy. But even then the Christian community went along with the government. As such, there was no attempt to display and sell copies of the Alkitab in public bookstores like MPH.

In December 2005, Prime Minister Abdullah Badawi made an agreement with Church leaders whereby Christians were allowed to import the Alkitab on condition that its front cover has the words "Penerbitan Kristian" along with the symbol of the cross.

Although the word 'compromise' is used here, it was actually the case of Christians giving ground. After all, even the unacceptable gazette in 1982 did not require imprinting of the words "Penerbitan Kristian" and the symbol of the cross.

So when Cabinet Minister Max Ongkili now suggests that Christians should compromise in a spirit of give and take, he should be reminded that it has always been the case of the Christians compromising - the Christians are always giving and the government is always taking.

Analysis

The issue of desecration did not arise when Christians agreed to print the cross with the caveat onto the cover of the Bible since it was to assure the government that Christians are not engaging in covert evangelism.

Unfortunately, this did not stop the government from continuing to seize the Alkitab and other Christian teaching materials. The harassment from the government climaxed with the recent stamping of the Alkitab without consent from the Christian community.

To add salt to injury, the chop includes in bold print the words, "FOR CHRISTIANS ONLY" "BY ORDER OF HOME MINISTER". This imprint amounts to discrimination against Christians and displays contempt towards their Holy Scripture. Two concerns arise immediately.

First, Christians cannot in good conscience limit the Word of God only to Christians. It is for anyone who freely seeks him including the animists in East Malaysia, atheists, secularists, Buddhists, Hindus, etc. By the same token the Buddhists and Hindus also say their holy writings are also for every interested seeker.

They don't have to apologise for their view and Christians respect their freedom to share their holy writings to all and sundry. Christians want to ask the government: "Why single out Christians and the Bible?" This is religious discrimination to say the least.

Second, the government officials obviously displayed contempt towards the Alkitab in the act of stamping it. How else can Christians react but to reject such an imposition? Why should Muslims feign surprise that Christians feel their Holy Bible (Alkitab) has been desecrated?

Indeed, some Muslims would respond with violence if their Quran is treated in the same manner. Be assured that Muslims understand the need to respect and give reverence to printed copies of holy texts.

Further, the government acted with arrogance towards both Christians and the Alkitab when they went full throttle to stamp on the Alkitab, even while the Christians cried "Desecration!" This is nothing less than an "in your face" insult.

To cap the arrogance, the government now arrogates for itself power over God's Word with the bold imprint, "BY ORDER OF HOME MINISTER". Such a statement imposed and imprinted upon the Alkitab is alarming as it can amount to BLASPHEMY (arrogating for oneself the honor and authority which belongs to God).

It is already an act of defacement when the government utterly disregarded the fact that Christians regard the Alkitab as Holy Scripture.

It is a hostile and contemptuous action that ignores the protest from Christians. In the light of these factors, any self-respecting Christian who loves God and His Holy Scripture can only judge the government's action as one of DESECRATION of God's Word.

KUALA LUMPUR, March 23 — Putrajaya’s release of 5,100 Malay bibles seized from Port Klang is contrary to a Selangor Islamic law forbidding its use, and puts the state in a bind as it goes against the country’s highest laws.

Selangor Mufti Datuk Tamyes Abd Wahid said the crux of the controversy is over the use of the word “Allah” in the bible, which is forbidden to religions other than Islam, as written in a 1988 state enactment on religious propagation.

“I am still of the view that they [the distribution of the Malay bibles] should be blocked, as this translation that contains the translation of the word ‘God’ to ‘Allah’ is dangerous and confusing , especially to the young,” the senior Islamic cleric told The Malaysian Insider yesterday.

He explained that young Muslims who had shallow knowledge of religion and faith would be confused by the use of the word “Allah” by Christians, which to them meant “Allah has a son... that Allah has a wife... God is a father”.

“Certainly it is not fitting for the government to allow the Alkitab to be released, not because it is in Bahasa Malaysia but because the use of the word [“Allah”] contained inside that could twist the faith of Muslims and we do not want this to happen,” Tamyes added.

“To be safe, it should not be released, must not be released and is fittingly detained and cannot be distributed,” the Mufti stressed.

Tamyes’ view echoes that of Perak Mufti Tan Sri Harussani Zakaria, who had previously warned the Najib administration that releasing the Christian holy books seized from Port Klang and Kuching port will incur the anger and dissatisfaction of Muslims.

Harussani had added that he was concerned because the Muslim community here will rise in protest, leading to greater religious tension nationwide.

KUALA LUMPUR, March 22 — The Najib administration relented today to demands from the Church not to attach serial numbers to impounded Malay-language Bibles as it prepares itself to face a Christian-majority electorate in Sarawak in the coming state polls.

It also promised that all future shipments of such holy books written in the national language would be released as long as they sported the words “For Christianity” in the Arial font, size 16, either printed at source or stamped at the receiving port.

For the consignment of 35,100 Alkitabs still held in Port Klang and Kuching Port, the administration said it was willing to provide “stickers” to cover the present stamps and serial numbers already marked on the books.

Should this fail to be satisfactory, it also said that it had made arrangements with Christian donors to help replace the entire consignment of Bibles with new ones, which will then be stamped only with the words “For Christianity”.

The announcement was made in a statement released to Bernama today by Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Datuk Seri Idris Jala following a meeting held last week between government leaders and Christian groups.

This morning, the media were called to the luxury Carcosa Seri Negara hotel in Kuala Lumpur, chosen for “security reasons”, according to 'Datuk T'.

In phone calls made this morning to reporters, a woman only said that they were to be given access to some “explosive” and “shocking” material.

The 'unveiling' of the video clip was managed with great secrecy - several individuals connected with the 'showing' were formally dressed, some wearing caps low over their forehead and wearing dark glasses. They conducted security checks on the 'invitees'.

Journalists and senior editors were taken in to a room to watch the clip in batches.

They were told to surrender all electronic gadgets such as handphones and cameras as well as their pens and notebooks.

They were made to wear an ankle-length brown robe over their clothes before they were allowed into the screening room.

Senior journalists and editors from Utusan Malaysia, New Straits Times and Berita Harian, who made up the first batch, declined to reveal anything when approached.

Note - The video was shown in batches.

The footage shows a man coming into a sparsely furnished room that has a bed, a dresser and an air-conditioning unit on the wall.

The man enters the room through a door from an adjoining room, accompanied by a man whose face is not visible - and who then leaves the room. An Asian woman was shown waiting in the room.

'Datuk T' forwarded the tape to bypass footage of the couple undressing and the woman taking a bath.

The footage then moved to the man having sex with the woman, who 'Datuk T' claimed to be a foreign sex worker.

Menteri Pertahanan, Datuk Seri Dr. Ahmad Zahid Hamidi berkata, selain itu, Ahli Parlimen DAP itu juga pernah bersekolah di negara jiran tersebut di peringkat sekolah rendah sehingga ke peringkat yang lebih tinggi.

Katanya, fakta itu mungkin diketahui oleh Ahli Parlimen Kinabatangan, Datuk Bung Moktar Radin sehingga menimbulkan ketegangan di antara kedua-dua wakil rakyat tersebut pada persidangan Dewan Rakyat semalam.

"Mungkin Bung (Moktar) tahu dia (Tony) belajar di Singapura dari sekolah rendah sehingga peringkat tinggi.

"Dia dulu ditangkap di Singapura, dibawa ke mahkamah, tetapi sebab hubungan dia mungkin baik dengan pejabat tertentu di sana, beliau dilepaskan (dan) tidak dapat jadi ahli Parlimen (di sana)," katanya pada sidang akhbar di sini hari ini.

Ahmad Zahid diminta mengulas mengenai kemarahan Tony terhadap Bung Moktar apabila digelar sebagai ejen Singapura oleh wakil rakyat Kinabatangan itu.

Bagaimanapun, Ahmad Zahid tidak menyokong kenyataan Bung Moktar tersebut dan meminta supaya Tony menjelaskan perkara itu di Dewan Rakyat memandangkan Bung Moktar melontarkan 'sindiran' itu di tempat sama.

KUCHING, March 18 — Thirty thousand Malay Bibles seized by Home Ministry officials from the port here were stamped today with the government’s seal without the importer’s consent despite Putrajaya’s assurance that the holy books for Sarawak Christians would be left untouched.

The move comes on the heels of an alleged defacement of a separate consignment of 5,100 Bibles shipped into Port Klang from Indonesia by the Selangor-based Bible Society of Malaysia (BSM), and has caused a surge in jitteriness as Sarawakians brace for a emotive state election expected to be called next month.

Home Minister Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein had defended yesterday his ministry’s stamping of 5,100 Malay-language Bibles in Port Klang with its official seal, saying it was standard protocol and not done to “deface” the Alkitab.

“As for the serial numbers on the Bibles, the reason why it was done to the specific Bibles is because they are subject to the particular seizure in Klang,” he added.

Hishammuddin’s Cabinet colleague Datuk Seri Nazri Aziz had also said the 5,100 copies in Port Klang remain illegal due to a prohibition in Selangor Islamic laws.

However, the de facto law minister had told The Malaysian Insider that the 30,000 Alkitab in Kuching could be released immediately as there was no enactment in Sarawak against the use of the term “Allah” in non-Muslim publications.

The Sarawak importer, James Redas, told The Malaysian Insider that local Bumiputera Christians are highly upset at what they see as a desecration of their holy book and will make their feelings felt at the ballot box.

“They know what to do when the elections come,” he remarked.

Ad agency says was asked for bribes to win tourism contract

KUALA LUMPUR, March 17 — The advertising agency behind the award-winning “Malaysia, Truly Asia” tourism campaign charged today that it withdrew a bid to renew its contract with the Tourism Ministry after being asked for bribes in exchange for the deal.

Integrated Strategic Communications’ (ISC) complaints against the ministry are already being probed by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC).

The agency said in a press statement today that it was rebutting Tourism Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ng Yen Yen’s denial of “ambiguity” in the tender process for the advertising and promotions contract, worth a total of RM381 million.

ISC founder and chief executive officer Austen Zecha (picture) alleged that both he and his deputy were jointly approached on January 19 to “offer the client” (the ministry) a 50 per cent “rebate” or an annual share of the firm’s income from the account.

In exchange, he said, ISC would then “re-win” another three-year Tourism Malaysia contract for the Europe, North America and Oceania tender.

“This essentially led ISC to decide to withdraw its tender on Wednesday, January 26,” Zecha said.

He added that ISC’s founders, shareholders, directors and management had unanimously agreed that the incident was a “grave insult” and that it added further suspicion to the ambiguity of the tender process on a whole.

He pointed out that ISC had an “impeccable” record in its work for the “Malaysia, Truly Asia” campaign, which it has handled since 1999 through the terms of four successive tourism ministers — Datuk Leo Michael Toyad, Datuk Seri Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor, Datuk Seri Azalina Othman and now Datuk Seri Ng Yen Yen.

Zecha also repeated ISC’s earlier allegation that it had been told by the ministry that it could only bill Tourism Malaysia RM3 million both in 2009 and 2010 for its previous three-year contract for Europe, which was actually worth RM18 million annually.

“It is only under this minister’s administration — never ever before, even prior to ISC’s past four contractual three years of service or its two predecessor agencies’ previous three contractual years of service covering the 1970s, 1980s and 1990s — did Tourism Malaysia allow ISC and its two predecessor agencies to bill it only one-sixth of any year’s stipulated contract’s worth, or only about 17 per cent.

“So what happened to the other 83 per cent of each contract year’s worth of the RM18 million in 2009 and 2010, and who authorised and benefited from the standard commissions of the other RM30 million of invoices over the past two years?” he asked.

“And does the government, especially the Treasury, allow for such hidden euphemistically-called ‘Direct Bookings’ to deprive bona fide and Treasury-registered companies to be basically ‘short-changed’ on contracts’ worth, and for which ISC duly paid Treasury the normal stamp duties based on its stipulated contracts’ worth?” said Zecha.

KUALA LUMPUR, March 16 — Two Christian groups who imported a total of 35,000 Malay bibles and had them seized by the home ministry could not believe their ears when told Putrajaya had ordered their release yesterday.

Spokesmen for the Bible Society of Malaysia (BSM) and the Sarawak branch of global Christian group, The Gideons, sounded sceptical when contacted for comment. “It’s the first step,” BSM general secretary, Reverend Dr Simon Wong, remarked to The Malaysian Insider over the phone last night.

The home ministry has impounded 35,000 copies of the Alkitab.

Wong said he had yet to hear from BSM chairman, Lee Min Choon, who had gone to Putrajaya earlier yesterday afternoon to meet with home ministry officials over the matter. He related that BSM has been waiting two years to collect its shipment of 5,100 books stuck at Port Klang and hinted that they would not believe the release was real until they had received the Alkitab directly into their hands.

“Like what we had experienced in the past when we went to the port and they said ‘no’,” Wong added referring to conflicting instructions from a senior home ministry official at the Port Klang office last June.

The BSM had sent an agent there after receiving notice to collect the Alkitab, but the agent had returned empty-handed after ministry official refused to honour the order, saying it was a mistake.

More recently, a shipment of 30,000 bibles worth RM78,000 bound for the Malay-speaking Christian market in Sarawak was seized from port and locked away by home ministry officials in Kuching.

The importer, who asked not to be named, told The Malaysian Insider he had received a faxed notice from the ministry’s Publications Control and Al-Quran Text division secretary, Datuk Zaitun Ab Samad at about 6.30pm yesterday.

The notice said the government would be releasing the Alkitab soon on condition that the books be stamped with the word “For Christian Use” on the cover of each book, but did not give a date for collection.

The notice also said that each book must be stamped with a serial number, which upset the importer who saw it as a government move to curtail freedom of religion in the Sarawak where seven out of ten people are non-Muslim.

“We don’t want this condition... Macam control item sahaja,” he told The Malaysian Insider in a phone call from Kuching.

The importer said he will be going to the home ministry’s office in the state capital today for an explanation.

Yesterday, the Najib administration ordered the release of 35,000 Malay-language Bibles which were seized at the ports of Kuching and Klang, bowing to pressure from Christian churches and Pakatan Rakyat (PR) politicians.

“This is a reasonable compromise in managing the polarities of views between Christians and Muslims in the country,” said Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Datuk Seri Idris Jala in a statement.

An earlier home ministry letter had failed to convince its own officials to release the bibles.

The Cabinet was set to discuss the issue on Friday with one eye on the Sarawak polls set to take place next month.

But with the seizure of the bibles drawing protests from Christians nationwide, a majority of whom live in Sabah and Sarawak, the federal government was forced to take action yesterday.

The Christian Federation of Malaysia, which represents 90 per cent of churches in Malaysia, has said that Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak made a decision to release the Alkitabs but so far, the home ministry, which controls customs, has refused to hand over the bibles.

Christians, who make up close to 10 per cent of Malaysia’s 28 million population, use Bahasa Malaysia in Sabah and Sarawak churches to preach to the multi-ethnic congregation who each have a distinctive tribal language.

But evangelist churches there, such as Sidang Injil Borneo (SIB), have crossed the South China Sea to preach to the growing number of Sarawakians and Sabahans who are settling down in the peninsula after furthering their studies or finding work here.

Jala said that after a careful and thorough review, the Attorney-General confirmed that the release of the bibles did not prejudice the ongoing court case of the “Allah” issue.

On Thursday, Ng Suee Lin, the DAP assemblyman was beaten up by some men believed to be from UMNO Tanjong Karang. He was in Tanjong Karang to meet some padi planters in Sawah Sempadan Tanjong Karang when he was punched and kicked in the head, arms and kicked in the stomach. Ng is now in the hospital as a result of the brutal beating.

What takes the cake is the response of the local MP, who is also Tanjong Karang UMNO division head and the Agriculture and Agro-based Industries Minister - Noh Omar. When contacted by Malaysiakini, he did not deny the incident, and instead was defiant.

In Malaysia, there are those who believe that Allah specifically refers to God in Islam.
For them, “Allah” refers to the one Muslim God, despite the views of those in other religions.
That the issue of the use of the word “Allah” is very sensitive to the Muslims. Many are offended.

Home Ministry to allow protests against ‘Allah’ ruling

PUTRAJAYA, Jan 6- The Home Ministry will allow a public demonstration against the “Allah” ruling, planned by Muslim groups this Friday at the Kampung Baru mosque here, to proceed and will only take action if “things get out of hand.”

Home Minister Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein Onn (pic) told a press conference here at a post-Cabinet meeting that the developments will be monitored and that action will only be taken if the need arises.

“There is a balance that needs to be addressed. We (the Home Ministry) have faced this situation before. Right now, if you do not allow the protest, it will cause a lot of emotional reaction. But if you also allow it, it might turn into a security threat,” explained Hishammuddin.

The Home Minister asserted that the core issue was the issue of safety of the country, and that the group had already been advised against the protest.

So much more enviromentally friendly that way. So much more green.

Now UMNO wants to take over the Chairmanship of Barisan Nasional in Penang. And you know-lah, this UMNO, once they sentuh saja, [sentuh aje, belum lagi pegang] they will immediately grab and never let go. Not even if Gerakan or MCA wins more seats than UMNO in Penang [which theoretically, is quite difficult, not just because most Penangites are too disgusted with Gerakan and MCA, but also because of how the seats are drawn up], will they return the position to the biggest winner.

Lulu wonders if Penang Gerakan members will stand by Koh Tsu Koon on this fight. Koh Tsu Koon is not very popular with Penang Gerakan especially after having pitted Teng Hock Nam, Teng Chang Yeow and Lee Kah Choon for the Chief Minister post, then having lead Penang BN to such a massive and embarrassing loss. Huan, who is super bitter with KTK let the cat out of the bag when he said that KTK has not returned to Batu Kawan, Huan's old seat which he was forced to vacate paving the way to what was supposed to have been KTK's ticket to a respectable entry to Parliament.

There are many, many reasons for Penang Gerakan to want to see KTK fail and be embarassed.

Lulu wonders if Gerakan Penang will be able to differentiate the trees from the forest and that they are supporting Gerakan's position as Penang BN Chief, not Koh Tsu Koon's position as Penang BN Chief.

The term ‘indecent behaviour’ has not been defined in the Act, and therefore, it is up to the discretion of the police to determine what constitutes ‘indecent’ behaviour. If the mak nyahs caught by the police are Muslims, they can be sent to the Syariah department to be charged at the Syariah Court for offences against the Islamic law. The penalty incurred could be a fine of between RM800 to RM3,000 (approximately US$210.50 to US$789.50) or imprisonment or both. The Islamic religious authority, like the police, can also carry out raids among the Muslim community to identify wrongdoing against Islam.

About half of the respondents in this study (55%) had been caught by the police at some time. The majority (75%) had been caught on three or fewer occasions. However, 17% had been caught between four and six times, 3% were caught between seven and nine times, and 5% had been caught ten times or more. The main reasons that they had been caught by the police seemed to be for cross-dressing (33%), indecent dressing (18%), prostitution (16%), a drug test, (13%), during a police raid or operation (10%), and loitering late at night (6%).

When they were taken to the police station, 71% had been stripped of their women’s clothing in front of other people, and 10% said that they were forced to wear men's clothes. On Najib's 100th day as PM, Najib Tun Razak dished out 11 “goodies” to the people.
One of them was a 20% discount for motorists who pay toll 80 times a month via Smart Tag or Touch ’n Go from Sept 1.

Teo asked if the cost of the 20% discount given to frequent highway users was borne by the toll concessionaires or if the government had to pay the concessionaires.
Teo said there were little details on the announcement available, which prompted her to bring up the issue during the debate.
“The deputy minister then replied it was the social responsibility of the toll concessionaires and that the government will not bear the cost of it,” said Teo.
“So it gave us an impression (in the house) that the 20% discount was given by the concession company and the government doesn’t need to pay for it which is good,” she added.
However, Teo said when PJ-Utara MP Tony Pua also raised the same question during the question and answer session; he received a different written reply from the Prime Minister’s department.
“The written reply said that the government will bear the cost of the 20% discount. This is a contrary to the reply given by the deputy minister so who is lying here?

Yong said there was no confusion over who bore the costs for providing the discounts because both the Government and toll concessionaires paid different types of incentives.
“For example, PLUS Expressways Berhad introduced two rebate programmes to Touch ‘N’ Go and Smart Tag users on their highways -- the PLUSMiles loyalty programme and the PLUS journey incentive which offer discounts of up to20%,” he added.
He said no conflicting issues arose on who should bear the costs of the toll discounts and that the answer he had given in Parliament on the rebates on Nov 30 were in reference to the 20% discount offered by the toll concessionaires.

Contacted by Malaysiakini, Ahmad wanted Gerakan president Dr Koh Tsu Koon, party state chief Dr Teng Hock Nan and former Bukit Bendera MP Chia Kwang Chye to publicly apologise to him.
He claimed that the trio were responsible for the breakdown in relationship between Gerakan, his division and Penang Umno during the height of the controversy.
At one point, enraged supporters of Ahmad had even torn posters of Koh.
"Even if they apologise, I will still have to consider whether to accept it or not," he said.

Its kinda mean to feel kinda nice imagining the three of them sweating over this arrogant demand.

The Malaysian Insider understands that earlier in the evening, some members of the public were registering themselves at certain locations throughout the city and were given coupons to collect at least RM30 in exchange for attending the function.
Some government-funded associations, for example, were asked to congregate at a particular location in town where they were given their money and subsequently ferried to the stadium by the busloads.
One member of the public, who spoke on condition of anonymity, told The Malaysian Insider that all he needed to do was to register his name at the location (his was in Sungai Siput), get his coupon and redeem it at a counter outside the stadium for RM30.
“It’s very simple. I got my RM30,” he said happily, adding that it was a fair deal as many people had to travel for some distance to attend the function.
Another member of the public said her association was also asked to attend the function and members were told to assemble outside a Chinese association hall in town to collect their money and use the bus transport.
This could perhaps be the reason behind the scores of buses that were seen ferrying people to the stadium last night.
The large vehicles were also the cause of the uncharacteristically long traffic queues leading towards the venue.

The Election Commission is hoping to re-introduce the "cooling off" period before polling day to prevent harassment of voters by party worker as they head to the polling stations to cast their votes.
This was a suggestion brought up by DPM Tan Sri Muhyiddin.

The proposed cooling off period could be between 24-48 hours between the end of the campaigning periof and polling day.

it is kononnya to "reduce the amount of political rhetoric and tension between the opposing parties while at the same time providing space for the voters to consider their options before they cast their votes on polling day."

During the last GE, they had 10min documentaries showing how bad crime is in Kelantan with a dramatisation of a carjacking. During the Permatang Pasir by-election, they were saying all kinds of sweet things about the BN candidate whom they have since disowned.

Anyone linked to a syndicate smuggling stolen cars overseas can be held under the Emergency (Public Order and Prevention of Crime) Ordinance, the Federal Court ruled today.
Federal Court judge Datuk Gopal Sri Ram said, this was because they posed a threat to public order.
In his 12-page judgment, he said the smuggling activities of syndicates was an obvious potential to disrupt public tranquility as they had the effect of providing thieves and would-be thieves a ready market for the disposal of stolen cars.

Party founder and national president RS Thanenthiran said the three-month-old party had attracted 50,000 members and predicted that it would reach 100,000 by year-end, going by ground sentiment.

There is a piece of land in Bandar Utama measuring 12,140 sq meters, bordering Effingham Tamil school. It was one of the seven parcels surrendered by Damansara Development Sdn Bhd to the previous useless BN state government to build public amenities.

The previous useless BN state government, confused public interest with political cronies, alienated some parcels to their political allies. The ugly BU8 building you see next to the McD drive-in sits on a piece of land "sold" to Gerakan. [If you sokong this "public amenity", go be a tenant there, or frequent the shops there. else, voice your displeasure by avoiding it for they have taken what could have been a park or a library or something like that from us].

The piece of land in BU11/1 was somehow sold for RM3 million before 2000, and the registered owners were [gasp] not MIC, but [drumroll] Samy Vellu and three other MIC office-bearers.

Samy then said that they were holding the land in trust for the party.

1. it was land alienated for public amenity. When a developer develops a taman, he has to set aside land for things like surau, schools, a community hall, parks and a fire station. Its not meant for Gerakan, MIC, car showroom or furniture hall.

At that time, Subramaniam was quite lackadaisical in responding to the query about the decision to register it under individual's name.

Samy Vellu had said he plans to place the MIED, which owns the multi-million ringgit AIMST University, as well as other NGOs he had established, under a foundation to be chaired by him and other individuals, including foreigners.

“Just because I happened to be MIC president, it does not mean MIED and AIMST belong to MIC,” said Samy Vellu.

Samy Vellu said he would spend “all his time” with the NGOs including MIED and AIMST after he steps down as MIC president “before his term ends in 2012.”

And now, finally, Subramaniam, former MIC deputy president, pucats.
Finally, he has come out "guns ablazing" by "vowing" today to "fight to the end" any attempt by his rival, the MIC president Datuk Seri S. Samy Vellu, to “hijack” the MIED and turn it into a NGO headed by himself.

The thing is, if Subramaniam and all other past, present and future MIC running dogs of Samy Vellu had done the right thing from the start, they would not have to fight this battle now.

Gerakan president Tan Sri Dr Koh Tsu Koon yesterday related his scary moments near the Bagan Pinang by-election nomination centre on Saturday when opposition members and supporters turned unruly.
Koh, who is also minister in the Prime Minister's Department, said he was being driven in his official car when hundreds of opposition supporters blocked the road leading to the Port Dickson Municipal Council building where the nomination process was taking place.
"A pool of Pas supporters were gathered in the middle of the road. They were shouting and my driver had to remove my official number plate. They booed at us so we decided to park at a nearby Petronas kiosk.
"The situation was rather hostile. They were yelling and showing vulgar signs. Shortly afterwards, it rained heavily and the crowd dispersed so we took the opportunity to leave the station and continued our journey to the nomination centre," Koh said after attending a Rukun Tetangga function here.
Koh admitted that he was scared and worried during the incident as the opposition supporters were very aggressive.

In July, a widow’s claim that her late husband had left her RM160 billion in a local bank account was given VIP treatment, by none other than this deputy minister who jadi minister through the backdoor. This Murugiah chap took personal interest in the case and announced to the whole world that he was trying to resolve this widow's claim.

Lulu rolled her eyes as she read of this murugiah, taking the widow's plight to the public.

To start out with, as NST puts it, "The money would also exceed the country’s reserves. According to a Forbes Asia report in May, the richest men in the country were Tan Sri Robert Kuok (Kuok Group) with an estimated worth around RM36 billion, followed by businessman, Ananda Krishnan (RM31.5 billion)."
The jaw-dropping amount exceeds the nation’s reserves and three times more than the combined wealth of Malaysia’s super rich Tan Sri Robert Kuok and Ananda Krishnan.
Sure or not.... her husband so rich? Whilst there are known people whose wealth cannot be ascertained but we all suspect is richer than Ananda Krishnan, [People like a certain former UMNO treasurer cum retired Finance Minister] but to have escaped our radar? A super-duper rich individual whose [suspected] wealth no one ever knew about?

if it was true, then Murugiah, in making this public had just put this widow into extreme danger. She would have been targeted for kidnap.

As it turns out,
THE Port Dickson widow who claimed that her late husband had left her a staggering RM160 billion actually has only RM1,600 in his accounts.
The two banks that were supposedly holding the money in the vaults revealed the paltry sum to her after an investigation.
The hilarious disclosure by the banks brings to an end the 48-year-old woman’s dream of joining the super rich of the world.

Murugiah has done a lot of other stupid things too.

His delusion over his standing in PPP and his great charm and power "saw" him recruiting 42,000 new members. This boast came after he was sacked from the party.

And now Murugiah claims he and his 157,000 supporters would be joining a multiracial party within the Barisan Nasional early next month.

Judges ordered out
KUALA LUMPUR: Two judges to go, two court staff members sacked and some demoted.
This is the disciplinary action taken so far as the Chief Justice sets new standards to weed out the “grossly inefficient”.
Justice Tun Zaki Azmi is sending out a strong message to the judges and court staff - shape up or ship out.
He has been monitoring their performance since he became the head of the judiciary last year.
Zaki confirmed, in an interview, that two High Court judges had been asked to leave the judiciary on their own accord.

Yes, currently, we may have faith and confidence in the current Chief Justice Tan Sri Zaki, who we all know is a learned man, having had no experience as a judge and yet was appointed directly as Federal Court judge in September 2007 and given a quintuple jump as Chief Justice in a matter of 13 months, and who in spite of having been a former UMNO Pengerusi Jawatankuasa Pemilihan and a former Disciplinary Committee Chairman, is a fair man and will not be involved in any UMNO-type cases.
A good man.
One whose years in the private sector exposed him to the shortcomings of the courts and now being in a position to make things right, has done so.
For example, when he was the president of the Court of Appeal, in a matter of two and a half months, he sorted out 50,000 files (volumes) and reduced the number of clerks assigned to handle the files from 13 to only two.
A man willing to make changes.

So, maybe his decision to encourage two "grossly inefficient" judges to retire should be lauded and supported by us. Rid the deadwood! Retire them early.

Just because Tan Sri Zaki is a man of integrity does not necesarily mean that his successor would be one too.

Judges are well protected under the law. And it is not any insignificant law at that. They are protected by no less than our Federal Constitution. Under Article 127 for instance, the conduct of a Judge cannot even be discussed by Parliament without a notice of a substantive motion being given by not less than a quarter of the total number of Parliamentarians. Also, a Judge cannot be dismissed except by His Majesty the King upon a recommendation by a tribunal established under Article 125.
Such is the protection accorded to Judges. This is necessary in order to prevent the Executives (the Government) from interfering with the Judiciary by asserting powers of dismissal or transfer at its own whims and fancies. Nevertheless, with compliant cohorts, 1988 has proven that despite such protection, the system could still be breached!
It is therefore imperative that any decision to remove any Judges, whether by reasons of misbehaviour or wrongdoings, must be done, and ONLY be done, in accordance with the procedure enshrined in the Federal Constitution. It does not speak volume for us to say that the procedure would be too expensive, time consuming or cumbersome. It is there for a reason.

Yes, Tan Sri Zaki is correct. The judiciary needs to be revamped.
But the procedures are stated out in the Federal Constitution.
We may today have this wise, intelligent and full of integrity Tan Sri Zaki making this decision to clean it up, but it may set a precedent for a crooked greedy corrupt CJ to invoke in the future.

in august, the Home Ministry has posted a notice of 1,669 applicants who have been shortlisted for the citizenship interview in the newspapers to announce the interview, which is the last step in the process of applying for Malaysian citizenship.

Lulu remembered the plight of many orang asals in Peninsular and Sabah & Sarawak who were born in the interior and their birth was not registered. Also the poor who were born in born at home and their parents were too poor and too uneducated to understand the importance of registering their children. There are also some unwed mothers who were shamed into not registering their newborn.
A combination of reasons have caused Malaysian-born Malaysians to not have their birth registered, resulting in no birth certificate, followed by no MyKad/IC which means, no citizenship.

Penampang Umno chief Datuk John Ambrose, the party’s first non-Muslim division chairman, said the move was aimed at strengthening Umno in the state.

Opening the Penampang Umno meeting at Kampung Limbanak here on Monday, he said both party president Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi and his deputy Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak had given the green light for setting up the taskforce.

“Sabah Umno is open to all races as the party fights for the rights of all bumiputras in the state. If Umno in Sabah is just serving one community, what would happen to the others?” he said.

John said Najib was scheduled to launch the taskforce in the remote interior district of Pensiangan soon.

He said Pensiangan was among eight of Sabah Umno’s 25 divisions where there were large numbers of non-Muslim bumiputras. The others were Penampang, Tenom, Papar, Kota Belud, Keningau, Kota Marudu and Kudat.

John said the primary objective of the taskforce would be to create awareness among non-Muslim bumiputras that Umno was open to them and that the party’s struggles was not merely for any particular community.

Simmering tension over Section 19 temple

Tension over the 150-year-old Sri Mariamman Temple in Section 19 had apparently been simmering even before the recent 'cow-head' protest over its proposed relocation to Section 23, Shah Alam.

Temple committee president A Selvakumaran today revealed that Malay NGO Majlis Permuafakatan Ummah (Pewaris) had erected a zinc fence (painted blue in photo) early this year across part of the land on which the temple is situated.

This, he said, had resulted in the loss of a 'car park' for devotees, who now find it more difficult to attend services at the temple.

“We complained about it to the police and Shah Alam City Council, but until now no action has been taken,” he said when contacted.

Worshippers now have to park their vehicles in the surrounding residential area, which causes traffic congestion especially during festivals.

“This is why we have to seek a police permit every time there is a festival, so that they can assist us with the traffic,” said Selvakumaran.

Devotees are also forced to resort to park their vehicles in the residential area on other occasions.

“Thank god, they (residents) are very understanding because they have known about (the temple's existence) for a long time,” said Selvakumaran.

However, the authorities have decided to relocate the temple, as it is within a residential area and because of traffic congestion during the observance of religious festivals.

Pewaris: It's our right

Pewaris, meanwhile, said it has a right to erect the fence as the land “belongs to the State Development Corporation (PKNS), and not to the temple”.

Pewaris spokesperson Nadzim Johan said when contacted that the fence was built to create a space for residents in the neighbourhood, for “physical activities, gatherings or ceremonies”.

“Although we were not authorised to (build the fence), they (authorities) should allow the land to be used by the residents because the temple is also borrowing the land from PKNS,” he said.

A signboard identifies the Pewaris-occupied site as Tapak Gelanggang Pewaris and states that the facility was officially opened on Jan 10.

Nadzim went on to deny that the erection of the fence has led to problems for Hindu worshippers.

“They can still park their vehicles on both sides of the road. Besides, we don't want them to expand the temple,” he added.

the military doctors very kindly helped do medical screening and aid at permatang pasir, coinciding [oh what luck!] with the permatang pasir by-elections.

The Orang Asals in the interior of Sarawak are now are facing acute food shortage. Whilst most of us are deciding between noodles and rice, McD or KFC, original or hot & spicy, the Penans had faced food shortage in the last four months after their farms were destroyed by insects and monkeys, resulting in poor harvest.

Some individuals have raised money to send food to our fellow anak bangsa Malaysia who are in hunger.
Unfortunately, the food cannot reach them due to logistic problems.

No bridge, so no food for Penans

MIRI: The food shortage problem in central Sarawak has been worsened after a timber company dismantled an iron bridge that links up to 3,000 people living inside the remote areas.

Efforts to send food aid to the Penans have now been seriously hampered.

Yesterday, more than 1,600 packets of rice weighing 16,000kg were despatched by donors through the Catholic Church.

However, the food supply is stuck at the Sungai Asap settlement, about 50km from the Bakun Dam, as timber lorries used to deliver the food cannot cross the Sungai Linau after the dismantling of the bridge.

The timber concession area was earmarked for flooding this October to create a reservoir for the dam.

Reverend Father Sylvester Ding, aid collection co-ordinator, said it would take a long time to carry food aid across the river by boat.

“We are in a dilemma as to how to send the food to Lusong Laku settlement and SRK Lusong Laku where the food shortage is most acute.

“We have no choice but to seek help from the locals to transport the food across the river.

“We will also try to reach five other settlements near the Indonesian border by other routes. We hope the weather will be favourable, as it has been a few weeks since supply reached those in need,” he said.

This is so sad.
Lulu hopes the army can step in to help with the food delivery.
Maybe even the big companies who have their own helicopters - off Lulu's mind - people like Genting could assist in food aid as part of their community project cum clear our conscience programme.

Yesterday, Najib announced the appointment of MAS MD and CEO Idril Jala as a minister without portfolio in the PM's Department and CEO of Performance Management and Delivery Unit.
Najib announced this during a cabinet KPI workshop.

The current Minister in charge is Koh Tsu Koon, and Idris Jala will report to him on KPI matters only, and for everything else, to the PM directly.

so, Lulu was thinking.
There is little doubt in lulu's little mind that KTK is not able to handle the KPI thingy and Najib brought in support. If KTK were to be measured by his delivarables today, he would have failed miserably.

what Lulu is wondering is,
is Najib helping non-performers by bring in help to complement the weaklings, to help and guide them etc so that the non-performer will understand what is required and be able to do his job well
or
is Najib warning non-performers that he will not hesitate to appoint someone to do your work if you are unable to perform and eventually, you will be booted out.

Barisan Nasional (BN) candidate Rohaizat Othman today hinted that one of the factors that could have caused his defeat was the “failure of the Chinese community to fulfill their promises of support”, in an indication that the racial rhetoric played and used against their rivals by the ruling coalition may have backfired.
“I am saddened by the fact that the Chinese community here have failed to fulfill their vows of support. They have failed to understand the concept of development that BN is trying to bring to the people of Permatang Pasir,” said Rohaizat.
The Umno man, however, refused to elaborate why he thought Chinese support was not forthcoming, saying that he would leave it to the central leadership to conduct a post-mortem to reveal the reasons.

Rohaizat should look in the mirror and realise that his integrity let him and his party down.

The Catholic Church here has sent out an urgent appeal to the public to help little children and adults who are facing acute food shortage in the remote Kapit Division in central Sarawak.
The food shortage in the Kapit Division has worsened and the people have sent out another appeal for immediate help.
The Miri Catholic Church, which has received urgent appeal from the folks there, is urging parishioners and the public to help these people who are living from hand to mouth every day.

Organisers of the "Michael Learns to Rock - eternity tour 2009" had better take heed of PAS's disapproval of the concert as it sees political implications and, at stake, the dignity of Muslims.

PAS Youth called on the organisers to immediately cancel the concert by the Danish group or face a protest demonstration.

Its chief, Nasrudin Hassan Tantawi, strongly condemned the cabinet's decision in allowing the "Michael Learns to Rock - eternity tour 2009" scheduled for Sept 5 in Genting Highlands.

"This is an insult at the highest level to Muslims and it shows that BN is disrespectful towards the Muslim community," he said today in a press statement.

While urging Islamic NGOs to support calling off the event, he also hit out at the BN government for approving the concert.

He threw a challenge at Umno youth: "Join forces with us in getting the concert banned."

He also questioned the role of Umno as defenders of the Islamic faith.

"If Umno allows this to go on, not only would they be devoid of blessings from Allah, the people would regard them with disgust at their Islamic pretense," he said.

He also called on the Fatwa Council and muftis to join in the protest against the cabinet for allowing such a "festival of sin" to take place.

EC bust ceramah for abuse of gov't machinery
The Welfare Department and a deputy minister were left red faced yesterday after a function they were involved in was stopped by the Election Commission.
The Barisan Nasional ceramah at Sama Gagah village was stopped following complaints by PKR officials that government machinery was being abused for campaigning purposes.
Led by EC officer Sulaiman Abdullah a team of enforcement officers visited the scene, accompanied by complainants, PKR treasurer-general William Leong, PKR, Youth deputy chief Faris Musa and Pantai Jerajak state rep Sim Tze Tzin.
Their surprise visit prompted Deputy Information, Communications and Culture Minister Heang Siak Kee to stop her speech half-way and vanish from the scene.
Sulaiman and his team also inspected a bus bearing the the Welfare Department logo and later instructed the bus driver to take the bus away.
Later, Sulaiman ordered a counter run, by the Women, Family and Community Development Ministry, to be closed immediately.
Ministry officers were seen frantically taking down buntings and other materials, while trying to avoid press photographers, before leaving on another bus.
With Heang's departure, the function had only Seberang Jaya state assemblyperson Arif Shah Omar Shah as the only Barisan Nasional representative present.
Arif Shah said he happened to be passing the area and believed that the function was organised by "some NGOs".
Contrary to his claim, large numbers of BN flags were draped all over the venue.
On the stage, the words "Please vote BN" were written in large Chinese characters. There were also several hampers on stage as well.
On Heang's presence, Arif said she was here to "shake hands" with voters.
"We all happened to be here. But Heang was later invited on stage to give a speech".
In another development, Sim claimed Heang's had said in her speech that all participants above 60 were allowed to claim RM200 from the organisers.
"Under the election laws, this is illegal," said Sim, who also urged the EC to take stern action against the event organisers.

this chap, his law firm, dunno exactly what happened, found himself in a situation where he could not refund almost RM 161,000 to Koperasi Pekebun Getah Negeri Pulau Pinang Berhad after a transaction to purchase a property was aborted.

UMNO, for face reasons, have now chosen to paint him as a hero.

The party leaders who select and screen candidates must have known of this impediment but considered financial misconduct a trivial matter.
Honesty is a minimal condition for public office. Whatever the other virtues of the candidate, he should not be considered if he fails this test. The candidates we field for election must have a clean record because we are asking the public to place their confidence in him as their leader, and democratic government breaks down without public confidence. and here is this amateur, in a not all that widely read blog, claiming that the office of a Selangor exco member was being used by some underworld characters. and lo and behold, the cops come swooping in.

Quoting an anonymous government source, the report added that at no time are ministers allowed to use private aircraft.

what could it be about.

According to Rocky,

it is about allegations made over the weekend by some blogs that Loke, who is also MP for Rasah, had called the Sultan of Perak and son Raja Nazrin by some unsavoury names in a posting dated Aug 6 on the blog The Might of the Pen.

The accusation is probably that Anthony Loke is behind that blog, but if you look at the stuff on that blog, it is quite obvious that the causes it "champions" is not the sort that Anthony [like so friend like that. Lulu knows him but he does not know Lulu] champions. Not even closet champion-er of those sort of things.

But what this whole incident reveals [beside the point that Lulu thinks Might of The Pen is a racist blog with a lot of crude language] is that these UMNO fellas are trying to give DAP a bad rap with baseless accusations and Anthony Loke seems to be target of the week. Look at how the pro-UMNO blogs are whacking him "Loke Siew Fook mesti dicaj sekeras-kerasnya di bawah Akta Hasutan!", "Biadap, Kurang Ajar Dan Naik Kepala", "ACT NOW!!!!!!!!!!", are some examples. Looking into the crystal ball, Lulu would not be surprised if the editorials in Utusan and Berita Harian would heavily hint of "some MP from DAP" memburuking the Sultan's good name. Afterall, they believe that if you repeat a lie often enough, people will start to believe the lie. See how the blogs caught on?

there are some people in Malaysia who feel that beer should not be sold in areas with a Muslim majority living in it.
those who dont like DAP have cried out loud, in deep anguish, full of emotion saying that by not disallowing beer to be sold, by asking the MBSA to return the confiscated beer that DAP does not respect Islam, insulting Islam etc forgetting that
1. there is no law which allowed that confiscation,
2. there is no law forbidding the sale to non-Muslims in the area,
3. for 51 years under BN rule, beer was sold in that area,
4. the BN ruled states do not have a problem
so, Lulu is going to pooh and pah their hue and cry.

Lulu wonders, how-lah, these hue-ers and cry-ers, if their children get a scholarship to US or UK? Or even to UM? In those countries and in PJ & KL, beer is sold in mini markets and convienience stores. How? The beer is screaming out, "BUY ME! BUY ME!". How? Give up the scholarship and stay in your Muslim majority enclave, safe from the presence of beer?

No-lah.
Teach your children well.
Teach them God's law and the moral law.
If God has said no, there is a reason and there will be consequences to disobedience.
Over consumption of alcohol gives you a "nice feeling" but at the expense of impairing your judgement.

Yesterday, Malaysiakini reported that the government was considering imposing an Internet filter to block "undesirable" websites, on the grounds of maintaining racial harmony in the multicultural nation.

A senior official with the National Security Council (NSC) told AFP that, "It is to keep out pornographic materials and bloggers who inflame racial sentiments. We need to maintain racial harmony. We cannot have full-blown democracy like in the United States"

That got Lulu thinking.
You know how the ruling party confuses Melayu and UMNO and interchanges both terms sesuka hati? So, Lulu suspects the ruling party's definition of "inflame racial sentiments" would most probably be anything that does not put UMNO in a favourable light.

So [so many so's yah?], maklumlah, Lulu's blog does not love UMNO.

According to counsel for Teoh's family Lim Lip Eng, it was originally arranged for the coroner to visit the entire 14th floor, but lawyers asked to see the 15th floor as well.

they're really, really pathetic.

They dont have enough guts to join the demo tomorrow, and still want to be hero, super-hero in fact, so they chose to submit "their" memoradum to the Yang di-Pertuan Agong one day ahead of the anti-ISA rally.

These fellas made fools of themselves every step of the way.

They originally planned to march from a nearby building to the palace. Maklumlah, the route taken by the GMI group tomorrow is too long.
But they had to cancel plans for even that short walk on the advice of the police.
So they drove to the palace entrance instead.
Then they could not submit their memorandum as they had not informed their intention to the palace officials earlier.

Lulu Wonders If We Have Been Suffering Needlessly For Years Over Something Which Has A Solution In Sight

Lulu thinks, if you live in the Klang Valley, you would probably know of someone who has been a victim of snatch thieves. A relative, a friend, a colleague. Lulu's sister had her handbag snatched from her right outside the house. She was lucky cos she was not hurt. A friend has her hand gashed during the snatch. 11 big stitches were needed to sew it back together. My friend's mum was not so lucky. She was pushed, she hit her head, went into a coma and died shortly after.

Kisah benar, life in the valley.

For years, we have lived like that.

In the national Key Result Areas (KRA) announced by Najib this week, tackling crime is one of them, and the goal is to reduce street crime rate by 20 per cent by the end of 2010.

Lulu is amazed, cos the next day, Federal Police has the solution that can dramatically reduce street crimes statistics. The CID director Commissioner Datuk Seri Mohd Bakri Zinin revealed that 80% of street crimes [mainly snatch thieves] are caused by drug addicts. So, by rounding up drug addicts, then the cops could see street crimes statistics being lowered by more than 20%.

Lulu is amazed.
Amazed-amazed-amazed.

The cops probably always knew this. It couldn't be such a coincidence that 2-3 days after Najib announced the KRAs, they come up with a solution. WHy did they have to wait till their performance is measured before they do something about it? How much blood has flowed and tears been shed in between the time the solution was staring them in the face and the actual nabbing now that their one report card system?

A cop used a Royal Malaysian Police aircraft to take him as well as two civilians on an aerial surveillance of two lots in Ulu Tungku, Lahad Datu, in which his real estate company Kinsajaya Sdn Bhd had a personal interest.
He also failed to declare the ownership of 20,000 Telekom Malaysia Berhad shares, 154,000 Permaju Industries Berhad shares and interest in two office properties worth RM1,032,840 at Megan Avenue II, Jalan Yap Kwan Seng, held by Bonus Circle Sdn Bhd, breaching the Public Servants Rules and Regulations which prohibit him from being involved in business.
The court threw out the case yesterday.

And no one should forget Teoh Beng Huat, who died whilst in MACC custody.
whom MACC says he was released, dunno what he was doing still in the building, mumble-mumble-mumble, but somehow, his phone and his car keys were still with MACC.

Mohan, who failed to win the Batu Caves state assembly seat in last year's general election, said the MIC Youth was respected as it fought without fear and favour on several issues affecting the Indian community.
